We’re looking for help reading submissions next month

Fireside is going to be open for short-story submissions for four weeks starting August 6, and we’re expecting to be getting a LOT of stories. We need some help sorting through them all. We have four people to read submissions right now, but we’d really like to have at least six more to make sure we can quickly get through the pile and get back to people.

Here’s what we’re looking for: careful readers who love short fiction and who can commit to reading up to five 2,000- to 4,000-word stories a day during the submission period. The volume may not be that high, but we don’t want to get surprised.

A few things. This is a volunteer position, but all the readers will get a one-year subscription to Fireside. If you will be submitting a story to Fireside, you CANNOT be a submission reader as well. If you are reading submissions, you cannot write online about the stories you read, even if you don’t use names. We want to show respect to the writers submitting to us.

If you’re interested in reading for us, please email me at brian@firesidemag.com. Let us know why you are interested, what you hope to get out of reading submissions, any relevant experience you have (such as writing or editing, though it is fine if you don’t have any), and tell us about a few short stories (or books) you’ve read recently that you enjoyed.

Thanks! We’re looking forward to having submissions, and to having a great submissions team.

(These guidelines borrow heavily from John Joseph Adams’ call for readers for his new magazine, Nightmare. He is wise, and I only steal from the best.)

Fireside is an excellent new literary magazine based in Boston. I proudly backed them on Kickstarter and am pleased to hear that they are working on their second issue.
